My Top 5 Non-Tech Related Blogs

So I’ve been over doing it lately with technology. Twhirling, Twittering, Vimeo-ing, Flickr-ing - it got to be a little much. For that reason, I’ve stared reading a bunch of blogs outside of those areas. Here’s some of my top 5 right now. Feel free to add your top in the comments:

  1. A Hamburger Today - This is probably my favorite non-tech blog right now. Beware though, this blog is deadly if it’s before noon and you’re in need of your lunchtime fix. They have an amazing camera, which means you can almost hear the sizzle and smell the burgers every time you visit the page.
  2. Shirtlog.com - This website features cool t-shirts found around the web. It’s pretty easy being here in Chicago to become a Threadless only zone, but this website provides varying coverage from around the net.
  3. KEXP Song of the day - Although I have Pandora, which I use pretty much every day, it’s always nice to get some spice into my normally house music filled ears. So I have this podcast/blog coming in on a daily basis. It’s great, you should subscribe.
  4. Web Urbanist - Geek art, music, graffiti, new technology. You’ll love it. Trust me.
  5. Green options - For the treehugger/environmentalist/urban hippie in all of us.

So what are your top 5 non-tech blogs?

Justice - DVNO (Retro Motion Graphics Heaven)

This video is just too good not to post. Keep an eye out for the HBO logo treatment.

As much as it pains me, the original Vimeo video is now private, so I had to post the YouTube version.

Why doesn’t Pandora have audio ads?

logo_pandora1.jpgDoes anyone know the answer to this? I’ve been an avid Pandora listener since day 1 and wondered when they would either go to:

  1. A subscription model
  2. Have audio ads between songs similar to regular commercial radio.

Thankfully, Pandora is the best thing since the last best thing and hasn’t done either of those. I have to wonder though, are those ad placements around the audio player turning the kind of profits they would hope? I mean, my typical user experience is to launch the player, go to a new tab or window, and forget about the Pandora interface all together. The only time I return is usually to vote a song up or down and then move back to what I was doing. I guess the advertisers can hope that my brief interaction is enough to hook me.

Where I think they are definitely making their money is via referral fees from iTunes or Amazon where people buy music. I know that I often hear a great song, hop over to Pandora, and ad it to my Amazon wish list for a later date. So it’s not an immediate revenue stream for either Pandora or Amazon, but a postponed one.

Any others with similar experiences and/or interactions?

Top 15 Vocoder Songs of All Time

On a more silly note, below is a compiliation of the greatest uses of the fantastic musical instrument, the Vocoder created by the genius Robert Moog Homer Dudley. If you are unfamiliar with what a Vocoder is, it’s pretty much the equivalent of taking your voice and then running it through a robotic cheese grater. What comes out is 100% D-Lite! Enjoy.

15. Bomfunk MC’s - Freestylers

14. Cameo - Word Up

Is that LeVar Burton?

13. Styx - Mr. Roboto
