you are so right. I used to own a geo metro in the early 90s that got 50 mpg. the technology is available but big oil companies will not allow for it. we have a car that runs on water and that guy is now dead and his invention is gone forever. A man named Stanley Meyer...it available but it will not surface cause they are not about going green or helping the environment. its about control and massive profits. besides we all know now that man made global warming is a total fraud.

it is a joke and it angers me to see ignorant people buy into this nonsense

I got 53mpg in my Ford Festiva in 1993, a non-bybrid, box which actually had some pep, and yea, probably was a deathtrap, but is the "smart car' any safer and it still doesn't average what the festiva did nearly 20 years ago!

You can still buy high octane fuel, you just have to know where to buy it, and yes it costs more. Nav-gas is 100octane +, racing fuel is also 100octane +. Back in the 60's 100octane fuel was readily available at any gas station at about the same cost as lower octane fuel. It wasn't more highly refined, it contained more lead additives.

America "wants" what the marketing people tell us we want. In the early to mid 1980's small, fuel efficient cars were selling well and were being advertised, then they started advertising huge fuel guzzling SUV (Stupid, Useless, Vehicle) and guess what? That's what started selling well! A 1981 Chevrolet Chevette Diesel got over 50mpg on the highway, how many cars get that today? The fact is, if it costs nearly the same amount of money to produce a small, fuel efficient car or an SUV and you can sell the SUV for 4 or 5 times what you can the small car, why promote small cars? It's all about profits.

I drive a VW Golf. It does 0 - 60 in 9 seconds and averages about 65mpg on the highway and around 45 around town. It cost around $25000 which i realise is more that most Americans would pay for a car that isn't the size of a small town. That said its done 60000 miles without a single mechanical glitch and older models exist which have run up over 300,000 miles and they still work fine!

The reason is that American cars are designed to be cheap to buy and short lived. If some money was invested in making them well, they would save each user a fortune in the long run. Also the gasoline in the states only has an Octane rating of 91 - whats the deal with that? 91% is so impure it would easily explain the mpg problem.

My KIA Picanto does 50 MPG(US). Pretty good, right? And, at the same time, it is 3 times cheaper than Toyota Prius.

oh and to the other points raised, if you want a lightweight car, just do away with the 10 airbags, adjustable seats, satnavs, aircon, electric windows, gloveboxes, arm rests, seat padding, seatbelt pretensioners, side impact protection, roll over cages, saloon boots, more than one radio speaker, dash boards, carpets, suspensions, etc..... but i dont fancy driving a 1970s fiesta, do you??? fact is we've come alot further in fuel economy than people think, its just our cars are getting heavier every year.

Ok, I am not going to read all of those, so if someone else has already said it, I am sorry...

As far as I can see where the US is concerned, it isn't down to the car makers... It's down to whoever makes your fuel!!!! Here in Europe we have diesel cars that can do 100MPG and we have petrol cars that can do 60MPG, my big 3litre Mercedes gets 35MPG and 43MPG on long highway journeys. I drove from Cheltenham UK, to Paris France using the ferry rather than the tunnel and averaged 43MPG going down at 70mph and 35MPG coming back doing 140MPH.... Then I was Shocked when i took a trip to the US! Your fuel is like sludge! Not at all refined.... And we wonder why your fuel is less than half the price of ours. Even our cheap and cheerful fuel is more efficient...

Granted yes, European car makers are much better at making economical cars, but! Take for example Volvo, Who make lovelly cars... Here in the UK a Volvo S40 will get you around 45mpg with petrol. I received an email from Volvo cars of north America recently which was boasting about the S40 making nearly 30MPG!!! the same car with the same engine, but YOUR fuel!
